Amazon.com Review Capable of 17 stitch functions and loaded with other options, this Singer machine is simple to operate and makes it possible for even novices to enjoy creative sewing. Some of the convenience features include a top drop-in bobbin that's easy-in, easy-out, and easy to see; a easy threading system with automatic needle-thread tension; an electronically controlled foot pedal for smoothly maintaining or changing speeds; touch-and-wind handwheel declutching for fast, easy bobbin winding; push-button reverse sewing for neat seam-ends; and a three-needle position selector for attaching zippers and top stitching. The machine is quiet and ruggedly built, includes a sewing light and a built-in carrying handle, provides horizontal thread delivery for better stitches, and has a slide-off extension table for free-arm sewing. Real excitement comes from the 17 stitch functions provided, including, for example, embroidering, monogram, satin, and darning. A complete accessory package (various presser feet, friction-free spool holders, transparent bobbins, and needles for sewing different fabrics) is included. Invaluable is Singer's illustrated, step-by-step instruction booklet covering everything from the basics to zipper sewing to pattern stitching to free-arm sewing to highly detailed buttonhole sewing--and much, much more. --Fred Brack

| Customer Reviews: Sewing Machine for Novices July 23, 2002 T. Serikova (San Francisco, Ca USA) 89 out of 91 found this review helpful
I have had this machine for years! I paid a lot more for it than Amazon is offering. So the price is just not an issue here. The main advantage of this machine is 1) It is Singer (the name says it all); 2) It has an automatic thread tension control (an invaluable feature for novices!); 3) It has 17 stitches (even the one for sewing on buttons, embroidery, and monogram); 4) It is very easy to operate, as a very detailed and easy to comprehend user manual is included; and 5) It is light-weight, compared to those bulky Kenmore and Bernina machines, it is is just a baby!I would definitely recommend this machine to novices (especially for such a price) it is easy and cute, too.
Love It! December 28, 2002 24 out of 26 found this review helpful
I haven't sewed in 25 yrs since Home Ec. class. I bought this because the price was right and it was a Singer. When I recieved it, I read the manual--very user friendly. It did a great job of describing the machine. It helped make my first project easy, beautiful, and eager to do more. Highly recommend it.
A STITCH IN TIME - IN THIS CASE 17! October 13, 2002 Gail Cooke (TX, USA) 35 out of 41 found this review helpful
Ease of use is at the top of my list, and this sewing machine certainly fills the bill. An especially attractive feature is the number of stitches it offers - 17 in all, even including embroidery. Now, my creations look professional! The instructions are clear and simple to follow - a necessity for non-mechanical folks like me.
So far, NOT so good ... and very disappointed! May 27, 2003 40 out of 40 found this review helpful
I was very excited to order this sewing machine at such a great price (plus free shipping, an Amazon rebate, and a free carrying case from Singer!). However, my bubble burst quickly when the machine arrived without most of the promised attachments. I had to write to Amazon and Singer, and was shipped the missing pieces separately. I must say that customer service handled this matter very well! As for the machine itself, I find it lacking the quality of the Kenmore it replaced. This machine is lightweight (which is normally a plus!) but it feels "cheap", and the foot pedal is literally a thin piece of plastic. I have never gotten the thing to run really well, but thought I just needed to get used to it. Unfortunately, now it has stopped working altogether [...]
Donýt count on the rebate if you buy from Amazon... November 10, 2003 15 out of 20 found this review helpful
The rebate forms clearly state that they cannot be duplicated (i.e. reproductions won't be accepted). Since Amazon's chosen method of giving out the rebate forms is to let you print them yourself, that means you will be sending in a reproduction. I asked Amazon if they had discussed this with the manufacturer, and whether the manufacturer had agreed to accept the reproductions for purchases on Amazon. Amazon never contacted them, even after they received my request for information, and (at least at the time of this writing) they continue to advertise the rebates that will probably not be honored.
